Signal Hill is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Richmond Heights and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the north and east, Pinole Valley to the south, and Hercules Rancho Cucamonga to the west. The first European settlers in Contra Costa County were Japanese people who arrived in 1879. They named their new land "Signal Hill" after a hill in Japan where they had seen signals being sent from ships. A post office was established at Signal Hill in 1887, and soon became known as one of the most important points on their route between San Francisco and Oakland. After World War II, many farmers moved into this area because of its good soil for growing crops. The local high school was founded in 1951 as part of a community development program called "A Better Way". In 1967, it became an independent district and changed its name to Contra Costa High School District #2. In 1984, California's then-new Proposition 13 passed which made public schools unenrolled suburban districts must choose between membership in government or tuition fees for students from more affluent towns outside of city limits (in this case Concordia-Concordia). So Contra Costa High School District #2 voted not to become a member of that district; instead it chose to open its doors to all students within its boundaries regardless of wealth or parental status (this decision has been upheld by court decisions). In recent years there have been several developments around Signal Hill: One such development is Richmond Heights Secondary School - opened up portions of Walnut Creek which formerly served as an agricultural reserve - which now houses grades 9th through 12th grade students along with additional pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade children; another such development is Arlington Oaks - completed earlier this year adjacent to Pinole Valley Elementary School - which will house pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students together with additional kindergarten through 4th grade children once it completes initial construction; also recently completed are two other elementary schools: Northlake Elementary School - for grades 5th through 7th; and Southlake Elementary School - for grades 1st through 3rd. These three developments add over 1,500 square feet onto what used to be just 10 classrooms at Northlake Elementary School alone! “I never thought I would see so much growth up here [at Signal Hill],” said Kaitlyn Bigham ’14 who lives near Arlington Oaks Elementary Schools.]

The original downtown buildings still stand today as part of the current municipal infrastructure of Signal Hill.
