Signal Hill is a small town in California, located about 25 miles east of Los Angeles. It was founded by the Spanish in 1769 as Rancho Signal Hill and became part of Orange County in 1853. The community name comes from the signal hill seen from many parts of the town. The hill was originally an artificial mound created to support a military fortification during the Mexican-American War. The first post office at Signal Hill opened on December 11, 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 1, 1906. The first settler in Signal Hill was John Waddell, who arrived with his family on November 15, 1857. His wife and two children soon followed. By 1860, most of the original settlers had left for other settlements within Orange County due to sanitary conditions or religious reasons. In 1870, George Copley built a gristmill on what is now Ninth Street just north of present-day Signal Hill High School. After several years of operations, he sold his mill to Jno Smeaton in 1875 for $1 million dollars ($ million today). At this point, Signal Hill began experiencing rapid growth thanks to new transportation options brought about by railroads such as the Central Pacific Railroad (CPR) and Union Pacific Railroad (UP). In 1886, Smeaton donated land to build a high school which would serve as a focal point for local businesses and residents alike. He also provided financial assistance towards its construction through donations and loans totaling $5 million ($ million today). The cornerstone for the high school was laid on September 5th of that year by then-Governor Goodwin Lyon Jr.. Today's high school building is one of only three remaining buildings from Smeaton's original donation/buildout project; all others have been destroyed or converted into more commercial ventures over time In 1907–1908 there occurred an attempted coup d'état against Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena while he attended an American exposition rally near Anaheim Hills; when Micheltorena failed to return home after curfew restrictions were placed upon him by General Antonio López de Santa Anna - leader of Mexico - some elements within Orange County's Republican Party accused him instead thereof As part of efforts to quash any possible insurrectionary activity within county borders during these tense times signals went up throughout much of southern California including at various mountain ranges manned primarily by volunteers known as "Red Men" During World War II many Signals citizens volunteered their services abroad becoming known as "Warrior Mothers." Ultimately however no active hostilities took place at either home or abroad Following World War II Signals experienced continued steady growth but again suffered significant declines following which dramatic increases were registered beginning around 1970 termed `The Golden Age`. However despite progressivism being popular among signers throughout this time period major economic setbacks surfaced beginning around 1990 – culminating with incorporation into neighbouring Riverside County . All told there has been little change since then with population totals continuing stubbornly elevated above those registers prior thereto

In 1896, the San Francisco 49ers played their first game at Candlestick Park on Signal Hill Boulevard.
