The first people to live in what would become Sierra Madre were Native Americans who inhabited what is now part of Kern County before European settlement began. In 1853, gold was discovered in nearby Mendocino County and quickly became a major industry in California. Businesses sprang up all around the mining area, including one near Sierra Madre that employed more than 100 men and women working 12-hour shifts for $5 per day. Gold rush days are best remembered for an event known as "Pit Stop", when miners stopped at a log cabin on Hwy 91 just outside of present-day Sierra Madre to get water and eat lunch while waiting for their next shift to start work again. In 1872, founder father George Pullen purchased land adjoining present-day Sierra Madre from Mexican landowners for $2 million dollars (about $140 million today). At first, Pullen used his money only to build a stockade around his new home; he soon realized that he could not support himself farming his land alone and decided to sell it off piecemeal over time. He also borrowed money against it from other investors so that he could keep making payments on it even if there was no gold available to harvest. A group of farmers led by John Sutter arrived in 1876 with their families after moving from Sacramento via wagon train from Angel City, California (). They named their community after Mother Teresa's Creek Rancho Santa Rita del Oro where they had previously lived during the 1850s as Mission Indians (). Most people living along Mother Teresa's creek later moved into what would become Yosemite National Park or founded communities elsewhere within Californian boundaries (). Today about 60% of modern-day Sierra Madre’s population remains descendants of original settlers dating back at least five generations (), most notably those descended from George Pullen’s children . A few hundred pioneers built homes between 1881 and 1886 but most left when gold prices dropped following discovery in Northern Nevada . fewer than 10 remain today
