The range forms the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and separates Los Angeles County from Kern County. The Sierra Madre Range is one of Earth's most diverse ecological regions, with over 150 different species of plants and animals found within its boundaries. The first humans to live in what is now Sierra Madre came during the late Pleistocene era, about 12,000 years ago. At that time, there was no significant human population or infrastructure within modern-day Sierra Madre; instead, these people lived off animal populations that roamed freely in the area. By 10,000 BC, humans had built upwards of 50 villages near present-day Livermore Valley. Some believe that early human settlers may have been Nosferatu–like creatures who practiced cannibalism and sacrificed other beings to their gods. After centuries of isolation and lack of contact with others on Earth, humans began expanding their presence into what is now Northern California around AD 1000. One such group was led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo – an explorer who led an expedition to explore North America for Spain between 1492 and 1496 – which visited present-day Santa Barbara County before landing at Monterey Bay on July 1st, 1542. Upon his return trip across North America (and ensuing landfall at Monterey), Cabrillo reported seeing two smoke signals which he thought were whales but later realized were fires set by Native Americans as part of a Preclassic ritual sacrifice ceremony. In 1769–1770 Spanish Conquistador José de Valdivia discovered present-day Fresno Valley when he explored what are now northeastern San Benito County and southeastern Alameda County while hunting camels west of Bakersfield. Valdivia named this new valley after himself – Sierra Madre – after studying maps he’d made while onboard his ship during his circumnavigation of South America (see also Rancho adobado). After coming ashore at Muir Woods National Monument in 1864 for a visit intended to promote agriculture within Californian borders instead ended up discovering Yosemite National Park four years later; Valdivia then renamed it after himself! In 1876 Mexican immigrant Manuel Nieto established a rancho adobado atop Mount Whitney near today’s Redwood City (northern California) whenady exploring Mono Lake; Nieto renamed it “Mimosa” due to its similarity to the word “mimosa” used by Spanish explorers on Central American coastlines during similar exploratory trips some 350 years earlier! In 1916 Ulysses S Grant bought 3 million acres northward along both sides of Highway 101 from Isidro Sánchez Cancha for $10 per acre! This land would become known as Grant Oaks National Monument & Preserve! In 1933 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9478 creating Yosemite National Park & Preserve following completion of World War II!! Today approximately 86%of Yosemite Valley remains undeveloped!!!
