Sierra Madre is a small, rural community in Kern County, California. It is located on the north-central edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Livermore to the west, Bakersfield to the north-west, and Fresno to the east. Sierra Madre was founded in 1887 as a small town on Rancho Las Faldas. The population of Sierra Madre peaked at 3,500 in 1910 and declined rapidly after World War I. However, it has since resumed its steady decline and currently has a population of just over 1,000 people. The history of Sierra Madre can be traced back to 1887 when rancho las faldas was purchased by Elias Bejarano from Manuel Nieto for $4,000. Bejarano renamed it "Sierra Madre" in honor of his mother's home country Spain. Between 1887 and 1912, only 38 families lived in Sierra Madre; however, this number increased dramatically during World War I due to military recruitment drives throughout Kern County. In 1915, many residents abandoned their homes because of serious drought conditions that had struck the valley previously no one had noticed. By 1918 there were only about 100 residents remaining in town; however this number decreased again following World War II with most of the population moving out into surrounding townships or villages such as Del Norte or Bakersfield which also suffered from significant droughts during that time period too. The current incarnation of Sierra Madre began developing around 1951 when developer Harry Muhlenberg constructed his first house on what is now known as Main Street; he also built several other houses within what is now known as East Side Park which housed primarily local school children until 1976 when all schools were moved out into West Side Park (now called Donnellan Drive). Muhlenberg continued to develop his property until 1978 when he sold it to John Condon who then developed it into what present day Sierra Madre consists of: an open plaza surrounded by several blocks of high-end residences with full public access including parkland across street izzyards/yards used for horse racing/golf courses etc.; numerous businesses including grocery stores; movie theaters; restaurants etc.; while still retaining much portions thereof remain undeveloped but are visible through fences or gates along streetsides It should be noted that while development has occurred on both sides of Donnellan Drive adjacent to East Side Park over time there have been few major changes taking place within either neighborhood aside from some landscaping updates - most notably a makeover project completed in 2006 spearheaded by Mayor Linda Chavez which replaced ornamentation on older trees with more modern design elements As stated earlier approximately 1 km² remains undeveloped across Donnellan Drive adjacent to East Side Park despite fencing/gate restrictions...although these areas are generally seen as lower priority due their unavailability for high density residential use they do offer unique views overlooking downtown Kern Cityscape

The region around Sierra Madre was originally named after the Monterey Peninsula in northern California. However, because of its proximity to Mexico City, it became known as La Tierra del Fuego (the Land of Fire). In 1848, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna designated this area as part of Rancho San Joaquin, which was land grant to central Californians by Mexico during the Alta California Conquest. The rancho was dissolved in 1851 when it came into ownership by American farmers and miners. The first Europeans to live in Sierra Madre were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1797. They built a small cabin on what is now Mount Shasta and began grazing their horses and cattle on the slopes below. Over time more people arrived and started farming there as well. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Sierra Madre with about 20 farms licenses issued each year. In 1852, US President James K Polk announced that he would annex La Paz County from Mexico if he became president. This created a power struggle between Polk and Mexican president Porfirio Díaz over who should have control over western lands acquired from Mexico during the Alta California Conquest (1846-1847). In 1854, US General Winfield Scott attacked Mexican positions at Chilpancingo near present-day Paso Robles with about 10% accuracy believing that they held an entire province under occupation called Baja California Viejo (New Baja Californiana or old Baja California). As a result of this battle Ramón Novarro was killed along with dozens of Mexicans including his brother José María Morelos y Pavón and some Americans including Francis Drake who served as Spanish military governor at Chilpancingo until his death in 1861 A few years later Mormon missionaries arrived in America looking for new opportunities after hearing about Brigham Young's church movement from their Chinese brethren back home When they reached San Francisco Bay they set up camp on shoreline adjacent to Fort Mason on March 24th 1853 renamed themselves "Mormons" due to fear that they might be accepted by Missionaries from Asia After weeks of camping out no one moved until early May when an lone ox offered itself for food A group composed mostly African Americans led by James Garland decided then and there not to take any food because "they had nothing else where they were going." On June 3rd Mormons marched eighteen miles downshoot Creek Road towards Mount Shasta taking two days instead of marching south like planned due To create confusion among Mexicans throughout much of what is now Southern Arizona Mormons stopped short at Prospect Springs which lay within Mexican territory claimed by Los Angeles County which Mormon leaders thought would provide them passage north If successful they would have advanced all the way downriver however upon arrival night fell before reaching Springdale so travelers took shelter inside prospect springs rather than continue downroad A subsequent attack against another fortuitous location called Adobe Walls failed resulting in only minor damage despite heavy enemy fire Five black soldiers serving under Captain John Cushing escorted LDS pioneers back across country via Newhall Pass without incident

The name Sierra Madre comes from two Spanish phrases - La Montaña de la Sierra (The Mountain of the Sierra) and El Camino Real (The Road to Santiago).
