By 1853, many families had arrived on the rancho, including many Anglo settlers from England who named their new town after their RanchoSantaClara home: San Miguel de Allende. In 1859, portions of Rancho Santa Clara were transferred to Mexican state Sonoma County as part of a land swap following Mexico's victory in the Mexican-American War. In 1870, all but 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) of what is now Utopia Road were purchased from Juan Ponce de León by developer James Irvine for $2 million dollars (). At that point it became one of Irvine's largest properties outside Los Angeles County (). Rancho Santa Clara experienced rapid growth during California's post-war era as thousands more people poured into Northern California seeking jobs in new technology companies such as Apple Inc., Intel Corp., Motorola Inc., Yahoo! Inc., Google Inc., Amazon Web Services (), eBay () and Facebook (). Many Anglo homeowners moved out or sold their homes in order to take advantage of this new development opportunity (). However, few African Americans participated in this burgeoning social fabric because they were not offered comparable opportunities or affordable housing (). As a result, Hispanics formed dominant enclaves within these technological hubs while African Americans languished behind them economically and socially.
