Shasta Lake is a large,pictured-in-the-wild body of water located in the Sacramento National Forest, about 25 miles southwest of Sacramento.It is part of the Shasta River watershed and has a surface area of 141 square miles. The lake is fed by two small creeks that flow from the mountain slopes to it northerly and easterly. The mainstem of the Shasta River flows through its center and joins the Calaveras River near Shasta City. The name "Shasta" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are many butterflies." The first Europeans to visit this area were fur traders who traveled up the Sacramento River in 1824. They called it Siskiyou because they thought it was a location where wild animals lived (siskiyou means "big deer"). A year later, Jedediah Smith arrived here with his party and named the river after General John Custer's cavalry unit which had fought at Battle of Stockton in 1848. In 1850, USGS rangers discovered this area and began mapping it as part of their national forest system. In 1906, Shasta Lake was formed when two smaller lakes were merged into one larger body due to changes in topography caused by goldmining operations in its vicinity. Today, Shasta Lake forms an important part of California's water supply; both its surface area (141 square miles) and volume make it one of CA's largest freshwater bodies.

This act opened up purchasing options for police departments across America and further decreased crime rates while also providing funding for research into new technologies such as electronic control units (ECU) which were later adopted by other agencies around the world.
