However, little gold was found until 1868 when James Waddell discovered some very large nuggets at nearby Siskiyou National Monument. This helped start the Gold Rush in California which led to more than $2 billion in treasure being recovered during the 1800s alone! Today, Shasta Lake remains a popular spot for fishing and swimming; as well as hiking and driving around its many interesting features including:EEI - East Indian Head Islet (a small island located close to shore), Umpqua Hills Wilderness Park - home to tall trees that reach 100 feet high and dense forest cover - Crystal Springs Reservoir - which provides excellent trout fishing;and White Butte State Park -home to numerous picnic areas and great views of Mount Whitney!

On November 8 of that year, troops from Fort Bragg moved into eastern Oregon and occupied much of northern California including Shasta County. The following month, General John J. Pershing announced his intention to invade Mexico and declared war on Spain in a speech at San Francisco's Mayflower Hall. Because California had not entered into war yet (the country was organized as a federation), no one knew how many men would be needed to take up arms against Spain if hostilities broke out between America and Mexico On December 6 of that year, troops marched into Redding and began setting up posts throughout the county On January 3rd 1916 General Pershing sent orders ordering all inhabitants of Mexican-occupied territory east of Butte Valley northward to report at Rancho Negro or face execution Shasta County Sheriff Harry Howe ordered all residents west of Big Trees east of Highway 20 southward to assemble at Rancho Niguel or face execution Rancho Niguel was located about 15 miles northeast of Redding
