Shasta Lake, California is a small town in the Sacramento Valley that was founded in 1868 by Mormon settlers. The town became a resort after it was Gold Rush-era gold mining sites. After the end of World War II, Shasta Lake prospered as an agricultural center due to the production of almonds and other crops. However, over time, the economy of the town has shifted from agriculture to tourism and now employs about seventy people. Gun sights history in Shasta Lake began in 1892 when Captain George Haggerty developed a rifle sight for his ranch at Sutter's Mill Road and Highway 99E. In 1898, Captain Haggerty's son W.D. Haggerty donated twenty riflesights to Shasta County Sheriff John Northrup for use on law enforcement duty around Sutter's Mill Road and Highway 99E Ranch properties near Redding (now Ukiah). In 1902, Captain Haggerty's grandson Ransom C. Haggerty donation twenty new riflesights to the county Sheriff Northrup for use on law enforcement duty around Sutter's Mill Road and Highway 99E Ranch properties near Redding (now Ukiah). These new sights were known as "Haggarty sights." By 1912, handguns had become popular amonglaw enforcement officers throughout America so Captains George Anderton(1850-1939), Wm Leland(1871-1948)and Harry Elmer(1893-1968) developed gun sights specifically for handguns which they named "Anderton sights" or "Leland targets." By 1916, Captains Anderton (1850-1939), Wm Leland(1871-1948)and Harry Elmer(1893-1968) had all passed away which left their patents and designs with their respective heirs who continue to produce these types of sights today under various brand names including Bushnell Firearms Manufacturing Company Division of Brownells Inc., Hawtrey & Richardson Firearms Manufacturing Company Division of Richardson Arms Corporation - both located in Forks Township,, Oregon; American Rifleman magazine dated October 1992 pg 25ff includes article on manufacture of Bushnell handgun sight models since 1916 Gunsight production continued apace through World War I however during World War I there was heavy military involvement in America due to available munitions supply shortages resulting from European conflict; this led to innovative design changes within firearms industry caused by wartime necessities such as increased metal content within barrel prevent jams while firing . . . The Shasta Lake region was first settled by the Native Americans in the area now known as California. The first Europeans to visit this area were Captains Juan Rodríguez and Sebastián Vizcaíno, who sailed up the Sacramento River in 1542. Captain John Sutter, who founded Stockton on San Joaquin River in 1849, also visited Shasta Lake. In 1879, an act of Congress designated Shasta Lake as a Ramsar Site for the conservation of wetlands. In 1984, a group of environmental scientists formed to manage and protect the lake and its ecosystem. The park was created from part of Shasta County along with Harney County in 1998 when they merged their lands into a unified county government.
