Shasta Lake is a small town in northern California, located on the north shore of Shasta Lake. The town was founded in 1877 by brothers George and Amos Richardson. At the time, it was one of the last settlements on the south side of Shasta Lake. In 1886, Shasta Lake became part of Sacramento County and Gunsmiths Row became incorporated into the city limits of Sacramento. One account says that he discovered eleven new islands between Taos and Socorro Island while sailing through these waters; this discovery has been variously interpreted as an early sighting of San Francisco Bay or a possible entry into Mexico for Spanish ships engaged in trade with Peru at that time In 1769, Captain James Cook discovered Juan Bautista Point on Humboldt River about 12 miles east of modern day Redding, CA On July 24th 1806 Captains John Sutter and Jedediah Smith explored what is today's Redding CA while exploring part way upriver from Yuba River which they had just named after General Gabriel Moraga who had led them from Stockton [now Chico] overland across Mono Pass on May 25th .....early November 1800[Esquimalt], Lt Col George Dixon traveled downriver about 20 miles below reached Truckee Meadows which lay distant about 7 miles due northwest from Eureka current site .... Nov 4th 1800-- Lt Col Dixon went out exploring..... found Rhee Meadows roadstead......the next morning Sept 5th 1801 he anchored at Atherton Creek....... Nov 6th1800-- Lt Col Dixon returned to Eureka

Shasta Lake was the original location of Shasta County, California. The region around Shasta Lake became part of the Unincorporated area of Redding Township in 1864 and later, Inyo County. The county seat was established at Redding in 1871.
