Shasta Lake is a reservoir located in the Sacramento Valley, California, United States. The lake is named after Shasta County and the town of Shasta City, California. The water body spans an area of 142 square miles (355 km2). It was formed by the confluence of three rivers: the Siskiyou River, the Trinity River, and the Tuolumne River. In 1933, it was enlarged by adding Bear Creek to its extent. As of 2019, it has a surface area of , making it one of California's largest lakes. The first Europeans to sight Shasta Lake were members of Captain John Muir's party who explored northern California from 1845-1849 on foot and horseback. On July 26, 1848 teamsters James Waddell and George Custer discovered this large body of water south-central Californian about 15 miles east-southeast of Mount Whitney at an elevation of 3,755 feet (1,120 m). At that time Bear Creek flowed through what is now downtown Shasta City before emptying into the Tuolumne River northwestward about two miles from whereMuir had discovered it on July 26th. In 1863 General Grant decided to build his army at Fort Donelson in present day Sacramento Valley as part of his campaign against Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War; partway through construction he ordered Lieutenant Colonel George Custer to lead a detachment from his 5th Cavalry Regiment across bear creek bridge over Mission Creek near present day Redding in order reconnaissance purposes only; when they reached within gunshot distance they dismounted and walked across without firing their weapons until they came upon a large Indian village consisting primarilyof women and children living under friendly fire from Confederate forces positioned nearby on high hills overlooking Donelson Park which lay just outside our city limits! Upon reaching within range we opened fire killing several Indians outright before retiring back across Mission creek for night!
