Shasta Lake is a reservoir located in the eastern Sacramento Valley, about 50 miles east of Sacramento. It was originally created by damming the south fork of the American River and filling it with water from Shasta and other rivers. The lake has a surface area of 955 square miles and a total storage capacity of 805,000 acre feet (3 million cubic meters). It is used for drinking, irrigation, power generation, and recreation. The first people to live in what is now Shasta Lakes area were the Hupa tribe. They hunted game on the property that now includes Shasta Lake. The Hupas built their first village on an island in the lake in AD 512-514. In 1853, George Catherwood became one of the first white men to visit what is now Shasta County when he led an exploring party upriver from Stockton to Fort Yuma. He named this location Siskiyou County after his friend Samuel Siskiyou, a member of the California Gold Rush expedition who had explored central California before reaching Sacramento County. After Catherwood's visit, some settlers began farming around Siskiyouville while others built log cabins near present day Del Norte Boulevard and Highway 1 north of Redding for winter use until they could find more permanent homes east of Redding Creek. In 1864, John Cranch discovered gold at Siskiyouville and soon started mining at nearby Geyserville. By 1870 all mining had stopped because there was no visible gold or silver veins but rich coal seams were discovered northwest of Geyserville which led to new mines being developed there beginning in 1872-1875 including ones that remain today called Donner Mines which include part ofdefine redwoods National Park as well as several small towns within its boundaries such as Daly City where many early San Francisco pioneers originated including Ignacio Zapata who founded Mexican restaurant La Bodega here
