By 1909, the population had increased to 1,200 residents and it began to build up some infrastructure such as a school, store, post office, hotel and junior high school (now known as Mount San Antonio High School). In 1922, Shafter became part of Imperial County when it was established from parts of Mono and Riverside counties. From then until 1959 it remained within Imperial County despite being outnumbered by neighboring Pershing County which straddled its border. This circumstance helped keep Shafter economically vibrant while preserving its cultural amenities such as art galleries, theaters and libraries. On July 25th, 2014 at 6:36pm local time (), A magnitude 8 (MV8) earthquake struck shafter with an epicenter located about 9 miles southeast of the community center on private land owned by Edwin Pritchard Jr., son-in-law to Timothy Leary who lived nearby in Menlo Park before his death in 1986 at age 88 years old (). No injuries were reported however extensive damage occurred throughout shadover including lossof power to many homes and businesses; total rebuilding will cost approximately $100 million ($million USD).
