Shafter is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin Valley region. The name "Shafter" was given to it by Captain John Shaffer and Lt. Donnell Shaffer during the Mexican–American War while they were stationed there at Fort Tejon. The town's first post office was established on January 6, 1853, and its first settler was J.F.Bennett. In 1858, the fort was abandoned and Shafter became a ghost town until it reoccupied by local residents in 1928 after being burned down by vandals years earlier. This led to development of what is now known as the revolver: a firearm that consisted of four guns linked together by means of screws (the frame) instead of chains or straps like those used in handguns (i.e., one handgun could be carried around with several additional magazines[1]). revolvers were also much easier to reload than handguns because they required just one hand rather than three hands per reloading job; this led them to become popular among both civilians and law enforcement alike during the late 19th century.[2] During World War II many governments imported large numbers of pistols designed specifically as military sidearms; these pistols came equipped with light machineguns that could shoot through walls and floors (hence their name “walloped” weapons).[3] As warfare continued throughout 1945 government agencies began looking for new ways to deploy firepower without risking lives on-the-job; this led ultimately to development of taser devices in 1949.[4] At first prototypes were simply electric shock guns developed by scientists working at various US governmental laboratories but soon versions were produced featuring negative electrodes – meaning these guns would not cause damage if discharged accidentally – which made them much more userfriendly[5].
