Shafter, California is a town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 521 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Sierra National Forest and north of Mono Lake. The name Shafter derives from the Spanish word "shaquille" meaning 'a place where there are many sheep'. In 1881, Shafter became one of the first communities in what would become Southern California to be granted city status. In 1907, it incorporated as a city under the name of Shafter City. The population of Shafter reached 544 in 1940 and peaked at 1,846 in 1960. Today the population is only around 100 people due to a combination of factors such as remoteness from larger towns and an economy that relies largely on agriculture. The history of Shafter begins with Hiram Shaftsburys arrival in 1871 when he bought land east of Red Rock Mines for $2 per acre (approximately $25 per km²). His purchase marked the beginning of what would become an important industry in the town - mining. Over time, other businesses followed suit: irrigation systems were built to support continued mining; shoe stores started up; schools were established; and post offices were opened.
