Shafter, California is a small town located in the Simi Hills region of Ventura County, California. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. Optical equipment and accessories have been used in Shafter for over 100 years. One of the oldest businesses in Shafter is the " optical store" which was established by Harry Stephenson in 1892. In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Atherton opened their own optical store on Main Street in Shafter. Through their business, they helped to revive interest in optics and continue to provide quality products to consumers throughout Ventura County. During World War II, local residents collected surplus military optic equipment and supplies from all over North America to be used by the war effort. This collection included items such as binoculars, telescope tubes, radar antennas, air-to-ground gunsights and more. When the war ended, many of these items were sold off or donated to local schools and libraries across Ventura County as part of Operation Windmill (the donation campaign coordinated by The American Library Association). In 1966, Orville Noyes opened his first optical supply shop inside what is now Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles; it was one of only a few optical retailers remaining open throughout South Central Los Angeles during that time period (the others being Sears Roebuck & Co., The Kresge Company and Jewelry Mart). Since then Orville has continued to serve Southern Californians with high-quality eyeglasses, sunglasses and other optical needs year-round - ensuring that everyone who visits Orville's shop feels welcome no matter what time of day it is! The name comes from General William Shafter's 1849 battle victory over Mexican forces at that location. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1867 as a staging ground for their journey to Utah. In 1886, Shafter became part of the newly formed Kern County when it was created from parts of Mono and San Joaquin counties. Its main industry until World War II was agriculture; however, this changed with the arrival of large-scale cotton production in the early 1960s. After decades of decline, including several stints as a ghost town, Shafter has seen recent growth in its economy as a bedroom community for Bakersfield and other nearby cities.

Many residents continue to identify their town with its strong sense of community tradition and values, which have helped keep the town vibrant over time.
Shafter, California was founded on July 29, 1853 by prospectors George Shafter and James K. Polk. It became a post office on October 6, 1854. The town is named after Rear Admiral John F. Shaffer who served in the U.S. Navy during the Mexican-American War and later as the United States Ambassador to Mexico City
