Shafter, California is a small town in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California. Situated on the east bank of the Sacramento River, it borders Rancho Cordova on the south and Newcastle on the north. The population was 9,724 at the 2000 census. Shafter's history dates back to 1847 when John Wesley Holmquist settled in what is now Shafter. He began ranching land that he named Holmquist Ranch and later became an early settler in Shafter Township. In 1881, James Waddell opened a store in what is now downtown Shafter and soon developed into a successful business. The post office was established in 1899, and by 1912 there were three stores in town. In 1925, Shafter incorporated as a city and quickly began to grow with its own schools and businesses. By 1939, it had reached its current size with 10 businesses and over 100 residents. During World War II, Shafter played an important role as an airfields for both U.S., Japanese American (AJAC) forces and British Commonwealth troops during Operation Husky which ended Japan's military occupation of Manchuria. After the war, Shallow Creek Dam was built across the river to improve irrigation purposes while also providing power for local industry; this addition increased residential development around downtown Shallyer from 2-3 homes per square mile to 20-30 homes per square mile today! The city annexed part of Newcastle in 1961 which added another layer of development to downtown Shallyer while still preserving much of its historic architecture! Today’s downtown area features several blocks of restaurants/bars/cafes/shops along one side with government buildings along another side - all within walking distance for most residents!

It is located on the eastern edge of Mono County and is bordered by Amherst to the east, Bishop to the south and west, and Rialto to the north. Shafter has a long history as a small farming community with cattle and horse ranching being its mainstay economic activities until after World War II when oil production began to increase in Inyo County. Today, Shafter's economy revolves around tourism with many functions that take place within its boundaries-from hiking trails near Shafter Lake to wine tasting events held at nearby Chaves Valley Winery. The name "Shaft" comes from early Spanish travelers who named this area for a deep ravine running through hill country just outside of town. The first inhabitants of what would become Shafter were Native Americans who lived there before European settlement began. They called it Cahuilla because they thought Mount Shafroth (now known as Mount Wilson) looked like an eagle's head turned upside down. In 1869 two men from Independence, Missouri - Elisha Gray and James Gadsden - arrived in what is now Inyo County looking for new land to prospect for silver deposits and found what would eventually be called Shaft Ravine which ran along present day US Route 190 W between Bishop and Amherst townships. The men quickly realized that this area had great potential for Ranching since it had excellent grazing grounds for their herds of livestock while also providing access to water resources necessary for their agricultural endeavors Back then such access was not common in these areas so they decided to establish a Ranch here under the name Gray & Gadsden lands Company which later became Gray Mines Co., Ltd.. Work on developing this property started in 1870 under direction of Captain John Treadwell although some claims date back further including 15 January 1819 when Humboldt Battalion Commander Juan Bautista Margarita Hernandez chartered three vessels “Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion” (Our Lady of Conception), “ Nuestra Señora de los Dolores” (Our Lady of Loretto) and “San Francisco” (St Francis) off San Diego Island pursuit of gold discovered at Sinaloa by Don Manuel Micheltorena but no results were achieved due either to bad weather or overwork caused by overzealousness on part of both parties involved A few years later Captain Treadwell met Captain George Hearn aboard USS Constitution who told him about rich gold fields under Angeles National Forest southwest of Yuma City He suggested that if he could find actual surface mines inside those mountains he could bring them up into operation as an investment instead of mere exploration so hearing this newsCaptain Treadwell leased 2 sections total future production: 640 acres x $50 per acre = $1,200 per year which means today’s value at current market prices This event marked possibly one of most significant milestones in America’s history as prior discoveries had been made only by fur traders or captains seeking financial gain rather than truly exploring For 10 years Captain Treadwell operated his mine producing business taking care not only with infrastructure but also with management during difficult times causing considerable wealth even today remaining largely uncashed Thanks especially to his son Capt James Wesley Treadwell Jr who took over operations following his father`s death After initially operating simply as a leaseholder Capt James Wesley Incorporated went public raising capital amounting unto itself more than $35 million dollars subsequently becoming oneofthelargest private companiesinamerica With headquarters located in downtown Los Angeles Capt Wesley(Jr.) built oneofthe largest commercial shopping centers ever constructed utilizing high technology/ laminated glass construction methods making it world class both commercially AND aesthetically WhenCaptWesley Jr.'s son Capt David Wesley retired from active business leadership effective 31 December 2006 AGCO Corporation purchased CaptDavidWesleyJr.'s interest leaving CaptDavidWesley Jr.(Jr.)AsTheManagerAndPresidentOfAGCOCorpWithANonCommercialEmployeeName

The name Shafter comes from a used during Mexican-American War era when General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was retreating from Mexico City after losing an important battle against U.S forces on October 25, 1846. Santa Anna's army paused near what is now Shafter while they regrouped and then continued on their way before finally surrendering two days later at Monterrey, Mexico. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1848, Texas claimed part of what are now Arizona and New Mexico while California took control of all but Amador County which remained with Spanish ownership for about 20 years until it became part of American territory in 1853. In 1857, Congress passed the Calaveras Gold Rush Act which awarded citizenship to those who had discovered gold within six months of its passage. This event kickstarted what would become known as America's "golden age" for mining and farming due to increased demand for food products caused by overpopulation and technological advancements such as railways that made transportation more accessible throughout America. In 1916 Shafter became a town when it was annexed by Modesto and San Joaquin Counties; however it only attained this status after being approved by the state government through a process called "zonation." This occurred because there were no other towns or villages in central valley aside from Modesto and Fresno Counties that wished to annex themselves into neighboring counties so they could be closer to their jobs and schools; however much like many Central Valley communities today%, Shafter lacked proper infrastructure such as roads or school systems making annexation an option less attractive than others given its size compared to adjacent counties With better infrastructure present including hospitals and fire departments thanks in part to contributions from local businesses such as Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), business has been strong since annexations began although taxes have still tended towards high levels due primarily to agriculture instead of industry Since gaining municipal autonomy in 1978 under then Mayor Arturo Villarreal (D), efforts have been made byVillarreal himself as well as successive mayors (Jorge Ramos appointed in 2017)to modernizeShofield’s infrastructure with a focus on social justice issues particularly veteran’s affairs
