Shafter, California is a small town located in the southern portion of San Bernardino County, California. It is bordered by Riverside to the east and south, and Menifee to the west. The population was 7,751 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1892 as a horse ranch named Sutter's Fort. It became a sleepy cattle town after Proposition 2 (1892), which banned handguns in Californias newly admitted state, made Shafter an outlaw city. The first gun show in Shafter took place on December 5th, 1893. Shafter's post office opened on February 14th, 1896. On July 1st of that year Shafter incorporated as a city under the name of "Shafter". In 1907 it changed its name back to "Shafter" after local doctor Edward J. Shaffer donated land for a park called "Doctor Shaffer Park". In 1915 there was an abortive proposal to rename it "Ender's Park" because Ender Wesson had owned property adjacent to town limits at that time and some people thought it would make more sense when things got started about having one name for all these places with different namesakes throughout history (Ender Wesson also contributed $10 towards park construction). In 1949 the City Council voted 6-3 not to annex neighboring Menifee into their city Limits thereby creating what is now known as Menifee Valley between Riverside and San Bernardino Counties - this decision helped keep rural living alive in this area while much of Northern San Bernardino County industrialized rapidly becoming very urbanized during those years making little impact on the demographics or lifestyles of residents hereabouts. However annexation occurred anyway due largely to efforts by Mayor Don Christenson who saw potential growth opportunities within MENIFEE VALLEY notwithstanding allegedly large legal fees being brought against him by cities like Riverside which were seeking similar annexation rights). Nethertheless annexed areas include sections of both Menifee Valley townships including parts of unincorporated areas located inside SHAFTER CITY LIMITS...in short -despite claims otherwise annexation never happened despite numerous attempts by local officials over many years; something which must be regarded as an ironic outcome given that most if not all former SHAFTER CITY residents today reside fully or partially within boundaries defined by men other than those currently wielding governance power hereabouts!

The first Europeans to visit Shafter were Spanish traders in the 16th century. They named the area "Bakersfield" after one of their towns in Yucaipa County, California. In 1847, an American gold strike led to dramatic growth in the town and surrounding countryside; Shafter's post office opened in 1849. The town's first school was built on a farm east of town in 1857. Shafter has experienced many ups and downs during its history, most notably during World War II when it was hit hard by enemy bombing and firebombing raids. Afterward, it regained much of its former prosperity as a result of various industrial developments over the years including farming and ranching; today Shafter retains some important aspects of its rural past including a large percentage of its originalresidential housing stock dating back to before World War II. Today's economy relies largely on agriculture which accounts for about 60%ofthe local workforce - producing crops such as cotton, hay, apples and oranges - along with light industry such as manufacturing aircraft parts and pumpskins for Chinese farmers who grow them near Bakersfield..

The first mayor of Shafter was Wm Eakin Smith; he served from 1889 to 1893 under Mayor James Simeon Johnson Jr.. Shakespeare's play "Henry IV" (1598) mentions Kern County in its opening scene when Prince Hal tells King Henry that he has found "a great country new born", which may be why courtiers refer to it as "the land where Shakespeare happened to be". In 1887, John H. Shaffer bought 8 acres within present-dayshalford Township for $10 per acre ($ today). This property formed what would become downtown Shafer where shopping malls now stand including the old JCPenney building which still stands today as part of Macy'srustle chain store concept development project adjacent to Interstate 5 south of downtown shafer during 2007-2012
