In the early 1870s, Shafter was a small agricultural town in Kern County, California. The population was only about 1000 people. But by 1874, Shafter had become an important gun manufacturing and trading center due to its location at the junction of two wagon trails that led from San Joaquin Valley to Yuba River Valley and the Central Pacific Railroad. Both trails were used for transportation of goods and people between these valleys. And because of this, it became very convenient for local farmers to trade goods with their neighbors in the surrounding area. This also led to the development of a strong trade relationship between Shafter and other eastern towns such as Bakersfield and Sacramento. In addition, many guns were produced here due to its good production quality and easy access to raw materials. Gun swivels are one example of a product that developed out of this tradeshow system. By 1851, there were about 25 residents living inShaftorville along the Cache Creek Indian removal trail which led from present day Reno to Yuba City on the lower Kern River Valley east of Fresno
