The department was later merged with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.

They named their rancho after Captain John Shafter of USS Constitution (1797). By 1860, only two men remained in Shafter: John Sutter and his brother-in-law Edward Pearcey. On July 6, 1876, when California became an American state, Shafter became part of Humboldt County. On January 1, 1907 it became part of Kings Canyon National Park which included all present day Humboldt County as well as parts of Butte and Mono counties east of Yosemite National Park

However, this did not mean that Shafter couldn't still enjoy some aspects of its past; many local businesses still remain today including restaurants, hotels, lumberyards, and more!

Shafter, California was founded on November 15, 1858 by George Shafter and his brother-in-law John Sutter. The town was named after the Battle of Gettysburg in which General Ulysses S. Grant led an army against Confederate forces.
