Shafter, California was founded on November 14, 1853 by John C. Shafter and his father, George Shaffer. The town was named after Captain John C. Shaffer who had been shot in the thigh while serving in the Mexican-American War. Captain Shaffer's death inspired George Shaffer to name his son John C. Shafter after him. The first post office in the town was established on December 12, 1853.
