Shafter, California is a small town located in the Sierra foothills of central California. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census and it is located within Fresno County. It lies on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Merced to the north, Tulare to the east, Kern to the south, and Bakersfield to the west. The first gun mag in Shafter was opened in 1874 by J.P. Nevin and Wm. Hite as part of their mercantile business. The present company building was built in 1924 and has been used as a storage facility for Shafter police department firearms since that time. In 1937, Gunsmiths & Range opened its doors with an11-man shop inside what is now Firebase Security Systems Incorporated’s building on Main Street in Shafter. From then until 1984 when it closed down due to economic conditions, Gunsmiths & Range operated out of leased space at Firebase Security Systems Incorporated’s office building on Castro Road in downtown Fresno (now known as Townsquare Shopping Center). In 1984 Guns America Corporation purchased Gunsmiths & Range from its original owners and reopened it as a full-service gun store under the name GUNS AMERICA INCORPORATED with a 17-man staff including our own museum which features over 2200 vintage firearms from throughout American history! GUNS AMERICA currently operates out of two locations: one located off I-880 just outside Yosemite National Park (near Half Dome) and another location located adjacent to our flagship museum complex - SHAFTER GARDENS - serving both local residents and tourists alike!

The store sold handguns, shotguns, rifles, ammunition, and other shooting supplies. Hirsch died in 1998, but his son Ira Hirsch III continued the business until he passed away in 2006. From 2006 to 2013 the store was run by Jeri Weigel-Hirsch. Then it became property of firearms manufacturer ArmaLite Corporation before being closed down with no explanation given in 2015.

Many businesses have also made their mark within Shafter such as Google Earth headquarters which was built there in 2005, or local paper company Hearst Corporation whichowned two newspapers – one called The Raider & The Californian and another called Hearst Californian – until 2012 when it merged with Times Mirror Company
