The first gun magazine in Shafter was called The Rifleman and it was started by John Hargrave. Hargrave had come to Shafter from San Francisco and he started the magazine to help promote rifle shooting in the town. The Magazine continued to be published until 1910. The next gun magazine in Shafter was called The Shooter and it was started by Lewis Howells. Howells had come to Shafter from Minneapolis, Minnesota and he started the magazine to help promote shotgun shooting in the town. The Magazine continued to be published until 1915. The third Gun Magazine in Shafter was called American Legion which was started by George Armstrong Custer Jr. Custer had served as a lieutenant colonel with the 5th Cavalry Regiment during World War I, and he decided to start a gun magazine after his return from war. The American Legion became one of the most popular gun magazines in Shafter because its articles were written by experienced shooters who were knowledgeable about firearms. It continued being published until 1939. In 1940, two new magazines were added to The Gun Magazines Directory: Blue Ribbon (which was started by Harry Wurtzel) and Western Hunter (which was started by Frank Zappa).
