Shafter is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,622 at the 2000 census and grew to 3,048 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Ontario, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Shafter was founded in 1887 by John A. Shafter and his wife Anna Capps Shafter. The original name for the community was "Fresno", but due to its proximity to Fresno City and because it became popular with cowboys and miners who wanted a place to stay while they were working in the nearby goldfields, the name "Shafter" stuck. In 1912, John A. Shafter donated 4 acres (1 hectare) of land west of town for use as a public school system open to both white and black students. This made Shafter one of the few towns in Kern County that was segregated by race when it first came into being. In 1923, father and son John A., Jr.,and George Hargrave built what is now Old Town Hall on First Street east of Main Street in Shafter for use as their home office during their business years as attorneys at law firm Gibson & Crandall LLP (now Katten Muchin). They also built two other homes there: one on Third Street east of Main Street and another near present day Forest Avenue south of First Street. On November 15th 1929, Mrs. Anna Capps Shaffer died suddenly after giving birth to her only child; however Mrs. John A., Jr.'s widow continued living with them until her death on October 5th 1934 from ovarian cancer caused by radiation exposure from nuclear testing conducted near Harry S Truman's presidential library site just north of town limits back then! Mr Statesville Savings Bank property line ran through town limits then so bank could sell land within boundaries... finally SHAFTER incorporation occurred effective January 1st 1951 ! On February 11th 1959 some kids playing around built an Ask Your Father fire orchard next door using logs from old Notch Roadhouse which burned down about five years earlier! ask your dad today if you can see it! After World War II saw many immigrants arrive from all over northern China come seeking new opportunities in America such as those found in Station Valley during that time period including many Foochows who had used their skills building radios during WWII across America’s Great Lakes region irrigation systems brought vehicles manufacturing plants started up here too making this area become known as “Ford Junction” thanks largely to Henry Ford who established his auto parts plant here

Arthur Shafter was born on October 1, 1851 in rural New York County, New York. He emigrated to Southern California with his family in 1872 and started a small grocery store near downtown Los Angeles. After several years of growth and success, Shafter decided to move his business to what is now the Eastern side of town - an area that he considered more accessible and favorable for customers. In 1915, Arthur Shafter donated land to establish the townsite of SHAFTERLAND adjacent to his grocery store site today's Main Street. This land had been used as grazing land by local farmers until it was purchased by SHAFTERLAND Corporation for $1 million dollars in 1945. The name "Shafferland" originated from early settler Jeptha Witherspoon who named the area after him (Jephtha Willoughby). Witherspoon arrived on horseback from Boston in 1776 during George Washington's first term as President and named portions of what are now Orange County and Riverside County after himself including Sutter's Fort (later known as Sutter's City) which he built on part of Rancho San Jacinto grant #4 given to Juan Bautista de Anza by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena on September 15th,. De Anza later granted Rancho Santa Ana y La Paloma y Tustin y Irvine varios pueblos en los Monterey Keys so that they would not become Spanish territory should Mexico regain possession of those keys following US victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek on November 6th 1781 ensuing Mexican War American independence From Spain
