The first post office in Shafter was established on November 1, 1887. The name of the town may be derived from Spanish meaning "place where trees grow." At one time it was also known as Happy Valley and had a population of around 100 people before World War II when its population decreased to about 30 due to relocation by the military. In 1948, Shafter became an incorporated village when all of Claremont-Mira Mesa was annexed into the city of Los Angeles. On December 12, 1958, Shafter's incorporation status was changed to that of a city after voters approved a proposition by then Mayor Jens Christensen to make it an official community within the city limits. The City Council created the first municipal services including fire protection and Parks and Recreation departments while still providing limited economic development services such as trash collection and road maintenance. Today Shafter remains much like it did back in 1958 with some few exceptions: most notably its excellent public schools which are second only to those in downtown Los Angeles; its well maintained parks system including two golf courses (one artificial); and its wide variety of restaurants and businesses which have contributed greatly to its growth over the years.
