Shafter is a small town in the Fresno Hills region of California. It is located on the eastern edge of Fresno County, about 25 miles south of Fresno and 100 miles east of Sacramento. The community was named after General John Shafto, who fought against Mexican forces in 1846 and 1847 as part of the American-Mexican War. In 1898, Shafter became part of the newly created City of Fresno and retained its name until it amalgamated with other nearby towns in 1955 to form the current city limits. The history of Shafter goes back to 1847 when General John Shafto arrived in what is now Fresno from Stockton with his army for an attempt to overthrow Mexico's rule over California. He built a ranch here which he operated until 1850 when he moved his family westward into present-day Kern County and founded what would become Shafer Ranch near modern day Coalinga. In 1852, George Atherton patented a tract here that later became known as Atherton Ranch (now part of central San Joaquin). In 1860, Wm Hetherington acquired one half interest in this land from George Atherton and started farming it himself. By 1865, he had taken over all but 1/4 mile (1 km) of the ranch due to lack of water availability elsewhere on the property - making him oneof Californias most successful ranchers during that time period. In 1886, Wm Hetherington sold his entire holdings within 4 miles (6 km) eastward along Highway 99 to Jno Sayers who organized what would become The Fowler Land Company Limitedorporated February 6th 1888 with Manager James Fowler as Presidente and Manager Wm Hetherington Vice Presidente etc., consisting originally onlyof men farmers interestedin buying & holding real estate situated between & includingthe town or village aforesaid calledShafer thenceforward christenedShafter
