After much debate between local residents and school board members about where they wanted their new high school (now Cal State Fullerton) situated;shallower decided on Shafter because it had been their hometown since they were children and it had “a rich history” with “many fine institutions” like “an old theater” that could serve as a model for the new high school. Shafter was founded in 1887 by George Shafter and his wife, Emma. The town is located on the former Rancho San Antonio Mexican land grant. It was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the Shafter Post Office moved to its current location.
