The Shafters were successful farmers for many years and managed to keep their land well-manured so that their crops could be harvested year-round without needing to plant anything else during winter time. In addition to their agricultural skills, Hugh also developed some notable technological advancements which helped him become one of the wealthiest men in central California during his time period. One such technological advancement was his development of an early form of irrigation system which he named "Hugh's Water Wheel". This hydraulic system allowed him to irrigate his farmland much more efficiently than traditional methods did before it! Additionally, he also developed a oil refinery which helped him achieve significant financial success during this time period thanks to his genius engineering!
Shafter was founded in 1874 by George Shafter and his wife, Emma. The town was named for George P. Shafto, who donated the land to the town. The first post office opened in 1875. In 1896, the town merged with neighboring Carlsbad to form Carlsbad County.
