In 1887, the Shafter Pistol and Rifle Club was formed in Shafter, California. They soon became involved in the pistol and rifle sports of their locality. In 1895, they organized a shoot at the fairgrounds which they continued to hold until 1903. That year, they licensed a revolver company in town and held their own shoots with that weapon from then on. The club also became interested in muzzleloading firearms and began using a powder magazine made by Eberhart Manufacturing Company for this purpose. The club also built its own millinery shop where it produced hats for members of the community. In 1916, the handgun range opened up northeast of town which led to more shoots being conducted there as well as other activities such as target shooting and blackpowder gaming. It wasn't until 1938 that the membership decided it was time to move into their present building on Market Street which still serves today as the clubhouse for The Shafter Pistol & Rifle Club Incorporated. From then on through various changes in ownership, including becoming an armory/ammunition store before being sold again to the club (1978-1981), The Shafter Pistol & Rifle Club has been one of Vallejo's most active organizations - hosting many events both large and small throughout its history!
