Shafter is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 30 miles northeast of Fresno. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shafter was founded on July 12, 1868 by George Shafter and his brother-in-law John Sutter, who had just come from Rancho Negro in Tulare County, California. George Shafter's father had been born there in 1820 and he died there in 1892. The first post office at Shafter was established on December 3, 1870. At that time it consisted of a cabin built by George Shafer and operated by Wm. Hickey as a mail route between Fresno and Stockton. In 1875 an ad appeared in the Fresno Bee announcing that "A Mail Route from Stockton to Shafter Is Now Open." This route continued until 1915 when it was replaced by State Route 606 which crossed over the Sacramento River near Eureka
Shafter was founded in 1876 by George Shaffer and his wife Emma. The town was named after Captain James Fenton, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1881, Shaffer opened a general store and post office in the town. In 1895, he built a three-story building that still stands in the town center. In 1916, Captain John Lymans donated land to the town for a public library. The first library was built on the current site of the city hall in 1924.
