Shafter is a small town located in central-northwestern Riverside County and it is one of the most rural areas in the county. It has a total area of 6 square miles with a population density of only 5 people per square mile. The average household size is 2.4 and there are only 15 households out of which 30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50% are married couples living together, 10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50% are non-families. Of all households, 25% are made up of individuals and 10% have someone from outside the family present.

Shafter, California is a town located in Kern County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Pico Rivera Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents of Shafter were Mexican immigrants who came in 1847 to work on the new Rancho San Miguel de la Alameda (later called Shafter) land grant from Governor Manuel Micheltorena. They erected a small cabin and began to plant crops. A post office was established in 1851, and by 1865 it had received a name change to Shafter due to its proximity to the now known as Hollywood or West Hollywood. During World War II, many local men joined the United States military and served in various theaters around the world. Two Shafter natives are buried within Arlington National Cemetery: Warrant Officer James Ewing “Jimmy” McCarthy (b 1942) and Sergeant First Class Leroy Kapp (b 1945). In 1951, Mayor Earl Hines presentation made Shafter an officially incorporated city with its own government and police department. In 1960, through passage of Measure M-1 by City Councilmember Donte Whitlock, annexed portions of unincorporated Kern County into Shafter for cityhood reasons only; these annexations have not been rescinded since then. A new library was built near Main Street in 1961-1963 with state money raised through a special sales tax approved by voters that year. The building underwent extensive renovations starting in 2003 which included adding an underground parking garage as well as other improvements including replacement of all roofs throughout the facility except for one original roof dating back to 1913 which still remains operational today
