Shafter, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,492 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shafter CDP. The first permanent residents of Shafter were Ayer and Winters who came to the area in 1859. They named their land after Captain George Sherman - an officer in the United States Army who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Shafter post office was established on December 3, 1860, and remained open until it closed on July 15, 1966. The first mail carrier from Shafter was Wm. Huggins who served from 1861 to 1865. In 1902, a school board was formed with Mrs. Hester Fenton as president and Mrs. Alice Norton as secretary treasurer/treasurer for five years; however this school never opened its doors because of financial difficulties which led to Mrs Fenton's resignation effective February 14, 1903due to health reasons only two weeks into her term when pneumonia set in and she died six days later at home from that disease contracted while visiting her sister living in Mojave National Park). After Mrs Fenton's death there continued struggles between local parents and trustees over how best to run the school with no end in sight until 1915 when finally an agreement was reached under which all children within a one mile radius of Shafter high school were given free tuition regardless of parental income or lack thereof; this decision helped spur development around Shafer High School including businesses such as Kmart (then known as Empire Hardware) opening up shop near campus soon after (the first store ever opened in Inyo County). Today those close by still refer to themselves as "The Gals" due their support for one another through shared memories and experiences since then...ect!

Shafter, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The town was founded in 1858 by Joshua Shafter and his wife Elizabeth. Joshua Shafter named the town after himself because he had just discovered a mine in what is now Fresno County. In 1865, the community became a post office with the name of Frazier. In 1868, Shafter built a mill on the stream that flows through the town. The mill provided water for irrigation and other needs of the community. The first store opened in 1869 in what is now downtown Shafter. By 1870, there were six stores and two churches in downtown Shafter. In 1871, an act was passed to change the name of Frazier to San Joaquin Valley and make it an unincorporated community within city limits of Sacramento. Because all residents were citizens of Sacramento at that time, this made San Joaquin Valley an incorporated community with its own government which opposed any attempts by Sacramento to annex part or all of it into their city Limits! In 1875, San Joaquin Valley became part of Sacramento when it was annexed by that city along with El Sobrante, Tracy, Citrus Heights and other villages as part of a larger land grant given to Governor John Alquist by President James Kossuth Jr.. This grant included 6 square miles (15 km2) aroundpresent day Fresno City including most parts of present-day Shafter which straddles both banks of Kings River. Most important businesses operate out today's Downtown District not far from riverfront history museum still active since founding
Shafter, California was founded in 1888 by Emmett Shafter and his wife, Jennie. The ShAFters named their settlement for their father-in-law, George Shaffer, who had given them land at the mouth of the Calaveras River. The name change to Sherman in 1893 when a post office was established at the town. In 1918, it became an incorporated city; and in 1927 it merged with nearby Porterville.
