Mexicanos used local Indian resources such as deer, bear, and turkey eggs to build their homes and farms; these early settlers also raised cotton until it became available east of the Rockies during the gold rush of 1849-1855. In 1881, German immigrants working on three railroad projects decided to move to central California because they were tired of living near mining operations that destroyed their homes and communities along the way. They named their new settlement after Saint Elmo's Fire—an event that happened in December 1800 that destroyed most of Chico, Calif., including much of what is now Selma County northeast of downtown Chico (the community today is called Easton). The first white residents moved into town in November 1881; at first they did so only for work on the railroad projects but soon enough they started hosting weddings, funerals, and other events at local churches under license from the Mission fathers themselves... By 1890 most Germans had left for good except for some young men who ran a store called Kaiser Wilhelm Import GmbH & Co., ExportImport Trading Company which imported goods from Germany until World War I... During these years there was also occasional intermarriage with Anglo families who had settled around Menlo Park or Palo Alto... A school was established at San Antonio de Padua Church soon thereafter; students were taught by Mexican nuns living adjacent to the mission station while locals learned how to read and write using Native American materials gathered during Missions Santa Margarita y Pueblo de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1848), Nuestra Señora del Carmen (1874), Ygnacio López CustodioMissionary School 1850-1860)… A High School opened in 1905 but closed due to lack tuition revenue…. In 1916 Drusilla Henderson AlvaradoopenedInterracial Female High School which served grades 9th-12th providing education opportunities for African Americans both before “civil rights” marches started happening here beginning innocently back then with MLK Jr’s visit Oct 1st 1960 thru Nov 5th 1961She continued teaching thru 1964 When Rosa Parks Was Arrested For sitting down at her bus stop Selma saw some extremely high levels violence throughout its early years due partly to competition amongst various groups vying for access to land/resources within its boundaries: whites/Mormons/Mexicanos/Anglos etc… this led eventually external forces such as WWI & WWII contributing greatly too although not fully understood then let alone Addressable!
