In Selma, California, the African American community has been protesting for years against police brutality and violence. One of the most visible protests occurred on December 5th, 1965 when a group of black students and civil rights workers confronted white officers while carrying signs reading "I want my freedom too." The confrontation led to a successful peaceful mobilization of black citizens against police brutality. In response, the Selma Police Department made changes to their policy which limited use of force and began using more subtle methods to try and resolve community disputes. A white teenager, 18-year old Abdulhakim Muhammad, was shot and killed by a black policeman, John Lewis, during the Black Panthers' peaceful " sit in" campaign outside of the United States Capitol building in Selma. The officer's use of force resulted in an international furor and protests across America. In response to public outcry, Congress passed the National Firearms Act of 1968 which made it illegal to possess firearms without a license or registration. This law also created prohibitions against carrying firearms into state capitols and other government buildings. In 1969, after years of litigation and protest, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the anti-gun laws with its ruling in "Powell v. California". The high court reasoned that because guns were not integral parts of American society as they were for African Americans living under Jim Crow laws in Southern states, arming citizens for self-defense would be unconstitutional under Second Amendment rights guarantees

The men who remained behind gathered into local bars and cafes where they sang and danced until morning before returning home Selma's major industry during this time was agriculture which provided most of its income until around World War II when it shifted towards heavy manufacturing due to advances in technology especially autos and other motor vehicles
