Selma, California is a small town located in Madera County, California. The population was 3,048 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Palo Alto metropolitan area. Selma has been called "the music capital of America" and its downtown district is home to many local and national music venues including The Folsom Street Fairgrounds and the Selma Armory. In 1932, Sheriff Harry Askins created an armory on Main Street in Selma to store weapons for local law enforcement officers. The armory became known as "The Arsenal." By 1951, it had become so common that the City Council banned smoking inside city limits while playing polo or baseball because people were vaping cigarettes outside with their earmuffs on. In 1957, Mayor Tom Bradley founded "Selma Music Festival," one of the earliest outdoor music festivals in North America. For over 40 years it has been hosted annually at various locations throughout Selma including Harrison Park and Patton Park along with smaller venues throughout town including Legion Hall and First Baptist Church amphitheater which can seat up to 7,000 people per concert! The Selma Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club beganRange shooting with a muzzleloader in 1894. They first became interested in shotguns in 1906. In 1916, the club bought their first shotgun. They also began to shoot pistols. They changed their name to the Selma Pistol & Rifle Club in 1921 when they decided that handguns were no longer the only game in town. In 1923, they started using boresighting equipment for NRA matches. From 1924-1929, they used a 12 gauge shotgun with a solid stock and recoil pad on the side of the gun for IPSC matches while at home; this shotgun is now considered a classic Selma rifle and pistol match weapon. In 1928, they moved to their present location on Old US Highway 1 just outside of Selma. This location served as their range from 1933 until 1978 when it closed due to financial difficulties. Selma Rifle and Pistol Club has been involved with NRA events since its inception including NRA meetings (including monthly meetings until 1978), USPSA sanctioned events (USPSA sanctioned from 1934-1978), state championships (9 different states represented from 1935-1978), national championships including 2x Shooter’s World Championships “(1979&1981)” as well as many other international competitions/meetings throughout its history
