In Selma, California, on April 6th, 1965 a historic event took place that forever changed the course of history. The Selma to Montgomery marches were the first ever peaceful protests against racism in America. Led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., these protests successfully brought attention to the plight of black Americans throughout the United States and helped spark the civil rights movement. Today,Selma is one of America’s most vibrant and diverse cities and it is home to an amazing array of cultural attractions including The Alabama Museum of History, which preserves artifacts from Alabama’s slave-based plantation system; The Selma Public Library; and The African American Museum. Kennedy (who later became president) and increasing crime rates, Selma’s population decreased drastically during the late 1940s and early 1950s. However, due to increasing activism within the city government as well as increased interest from tourists and businesses withinSelma overall – entrepreneurs began redevelopment efforts that would see significant progress made in terms of creating new modes of living for all residents since desegregation had not happened across town yet! In 1955 Mayor James Knowles declaredSelma “the People’s City” after revealing his plans for gradual integration into Montgomery County through land acquisition which would eventually allow for majority-black housing developments in downtown areas as well! This marked an important shift forSelma – becoming both more racially integrated than Montgomery County generally while still remaining a primarily white community! Today Selmas diversity can be seen firsthand with its plethora of architecture styles from Victorian Era homes to modernist structures alluding to both its historical roots as well as currentmopolitan atmosphere - something that has only become more evident over time!
