Selma was a black community in the heart of California’s Imperial Valley. From its inception, Selma was an open-air shopping center that functioned as a crossroads for Black and Mexican families. The shopping center became a focal point for social and political activism following the 1965 U.S. Supreme Court case, “Brown v. Board of Education” which legalized racial segregation in America. The Shopping Center Massacre took place on March 20, 1969 when white supremacists protesting against integration at the shopping center opened fire on black civilians who were peacefully assembling to commemorate Brown v. Board of Education. Seventy nine people were killed, including six children, and thirty-six injuries were sustained in the massacre. The shooting shocked America and prompted protests throughout California alone; Selma became known as “the city that died” due to the number of fatalities and injuries caused by white supremacists during that year’s civil rights movement within its borders

Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech took place there. King called for equal rights for all races and warned against violence if these goals were not achieved. This speech helped bring attention to Selma and made it an important center of civil rights activism throughout the country. In 1969, Selma became an official racial integration community after the Ulysses S Grant Bridge connecting Montgomery County with Los Angeles was opened to traffic. This event marked a new beginning in what has been known as history's most heated race issue: How do we put America back together? The town continued to grow as more people came here seeking opportunity and equality. By 1975,Selma had become one of America's most diverse cities with over 50% African American residents
Selma was a city in the U.S. state of California, on the banks of the Sacramento River. It was also a major slave market and community for black Americans during the 19th century. The city's nickname is "the Mecca of Black America." The first white person to visit Selma was James Fenton, who explored what is now Selma in 1827 while looking for a route to Sonoma County. A year later, George Catlin included Selma among his Top 8 American places to see in his 1849 book "American Natives". In 1848, General John Boggs traveled through Selma on his way from Montgomery Ala., to Yuba County in Northern California. He noted that "the colored people are numerous and well-to-do", and recommended it as a place where slaves could be bought and sold easily due to its strategic location along the road between Montgomery Ala., and Sacramento Calif., making it an important transportation hub for slaves heading eastward towards freedom. In 1850, Abraham Lincoln visited Selma while attending Southern Baptist Convention meetings in Mobile Alabama; he had come there as part of a tour of the South to drum up support for his candidacy for President at the upcoming election. In April 1851, Confederate forces burned down City Hall without firing any shots; this event served as basis for Union general Robert E Lee's suggestion that Negroes be taken into slavery rather than integrated into society - an idea which would become known as Reconstructionism.
