Selma is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. At the 2010 census, Selma had a population of 64,831. The name "Selma" was given to it by General William Tecumseh Sherman in honor of Dr. John C. Pettit's donation of land for the town in 1871. Selma is located on the northern edge of Fresno County and east-northeast of Stockton, within Kern County. It is home to the University of California at Selma and to several small businesses and schools. The city began as a community called Harmony Township on March 10, 1871 when General William Tecumseh Sherman purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of land from Jno. Pettit for $10 per acre ($2 million today). The town was named after Drs John C. Pettit and James Swayne who donated six acres (two hectares). The first post office opened in 1872 with Wm Hargrave serving as its first clerk; it closed two years later due to low mail volume. In 1875, an addition was built on Fourth Street which served as the city's jail until 1907 when construction began on what is now City Hall which still stands today. In 1881, Selma School District No 9 organized with a school house on Third Street near what is now City Hall; that district would become known as West Side Elementary School District No 1 . In 1886–87, Holy Cross Academy relocated from Stockton to Selma because there wasn't enough space at Bishop Mifflin Catholic High School . That same year saw the founding of First Methodist Church and Baptist church both located along Third Street between North Bridge Road and Hoover Boulevard . On May 5th 1889, voters passed Measure I , authorizing annexation by Fresno County ; this action created what are now East Palo Alto and League City districts within present-day Selma boundaries . On November 3rd 1890 Voters passed Measure II authorizing sale or leasehold interest in real estate comprising most parts eastwardly surveyed including Harmony Township including all property northwardly surveyed lying eastwardly above Interstate 5 south thereof extending northerly thereto except one half acre (0201 m²) lying easterly thereof sold by Capt Elisha Cooke pursuant to mesne sale order entitled "White Sands Ranch" sold by him under said order July 22nd 1830 ; this measure became effective immediately upon passage providing that if any part or parcel claiming rights thereto be objected to before said Commissioners prior To January 1st 1897 then no man could claim title thereto after such objection having been made without prejudice against any other person interested therein during such time so long as said objections were not published unopposed aforesaid giving full liberty unto purchasers for whatever sum they may choose to purchase so acquired notwithstanding any objections offered hereafter about title existing Prior thereto according to law Sale proceeds went into Improvement fund which provided capital improvements necessary for erection & equipping school building erected outside limits hereinbefore mentioned . On December 15th 1896 First Methodist Church moved again from 3rd street corner onto Central Avenue El Paso street

Selma, California is a city in the U.S. state of California, located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. As of 2015, it had a population of 94,844 and is the second most populous city in San Francisco after San Jose. The name Selma comes from an 1849 military expedition led by General George Custer to occupy what is now south Selma County, Alabama and march into Montgomery County to demand reparations for Indian losses during the Mexican-American War. The first permanent European settlement in Selma was founded by Captain James Cook on December 5, 1776 as part of his attempt to explore and map the Pacific Northwest. He named this new town "Humboldt" after Count Hieronymus Georg Friedrich von Humboldt, who had supported him financially during his explorations across North America. The first post office at Humboldt was established on January 17, 1777; its name changed to "Selma" on April 6th that year whenpsnipe (a kind of 412) moved into the town from Eureka Springs next door (). In 1836–37 Confederate forces burned down several businesses near Town Hall Square following a skirmish over disputed rights to grazing land east of town; one business owner later said that "the loss amounted to $5 000". A large number of African Americans were living in Selma at this time: early white settlers did not want them around because they constituted a threat to their social order and economic opportunities. However, as cotton prices increased throughout the 1840s black people began moving into Selma from other parts of Alabama and Mississippi because they could find better work there than being farmer or slave labourers in nearby plantations
Selma was founded in 1871 by a group of men who campaigned for the right to vote. They were successful, and in 1965 Selma became the first city in the United States to be voting rights black. The following year,Selma was named capital of Alabama.
