Selma is a small town in the U.S. state of California, located in County Blythe, about 25 miles south of Sacramento. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,751. Selma has been a CDP since 1959. The name "Selma" comes from Spanish for "black veil." The town's history dates back to 1836 when surveyors named it Don Fernando de la Cueva locality after Iberian explorer and soldier Francisco de la Cueva y Valdés who had visited this region in 1827 and 1828. In 1860, when Don Fernando de la Cueva died without issue, his nephews decided to give Selma to their father-in-law Antonio del Valle as part of his estate after he died. Antonio del Valle brought over 160 acres (66 ha) of land to build what would become Selma into a small but thriving community with five stores and one blacksmith shop within 10 years; all were founded by men who had come down from San Joaquin Valley or elsewhere in Northern California during the Gold Rush era (1848-1860). His son José María del Valle began operating the first post office on December 15, 1860 - just four days after he arrived in Selma from Stockton with mail for neighbors upriver at Trinidad Mission Station near Sacramento; today's Post Office building still stands on First Street between Hwy 99 and Broadway Avenue. A Methodist church was built soon thereafter - also known as St James' Episcopal Church - which remained until 1942 when it burned down due to air raid damage. In 1865 an Indian burial ground was discovered east of town; local residents digging for coal nearby uncovered 535 human skeletons dating back to AD 1000! Today's Goodwin Park is also named for him: Jose María Goodwin park occupies most of what once were two blocks north of Main Street between Broadway Avenue and Third Street where he bought land from The Alameda Co., a rancher & developer that included real estate pioneer John Davenport & fellow Democrat Samuel Gompers among its initial backers (& later Enemies). The Del Valle family donated much more property over time including some now within city limits: present day Old Town Square includes parts of three buildings added along First Street between Broadway Avenue and Third Street bordered by North Division Road & West Division Road --- all now used as businesses/residential units --- while Easton Hall / Easton Place features a large late 19th century courthouse originally associated with Pomo Indians before it became unavailable during World War II because of heavy use by the Army Air Forces base nearby; off University Ave., one block south on Fourth Street near present day Interstate 495 sits an impressive 1915 brick schoolhouse which served both local pupils (& later students at nearby Diablo College) &Caltech staff until 1994 when it too went out smoke followingLipperation by State legislators led by then UMC President Dick Thornburgh aka "Dirty Dick" regarding Blackface Halloween costumes worn by faculty members at various campus locations! Evergreen Mall adjacent to downtown offers shopping opportunities especially for those interested in antique goods although there has been little development recenty affecting Selma other than annexation & rezoning schemes Selma has always been racially segregated however this segregation slowly began breaking down throughout the 20th century as white people moved into town while African Americans remained largely confined to rural areas outside Selmas reach or scattered throughout Southern California strongholds such as Los Angeles County or San Diego County
