The community was founded by white settlers on May 15, 1871 when they drove off an Indian raiders and established a trading post west of Redwood City on "Huckleberry Hill." A post office was established in 1872 and named for Selma's founder, James W. Huddle. At first, Selma functioned as a small farming town with only a few dwellings and two businesses: the Blacksmith Shop and the Tallow Barn. Recognizing its strategic location atop "Huckleberry Hill" - which overlooked most of central California - Selma quickly began to grow into one of the largest towns in central California during its early years. due to its location near Redwood City and San Francisco Bay - both key transportation hubs for travelers walking or driving to various other destinations throughout California - Selma rapidly grew into one of America’s busiest railway junction cities during its early years; goods traveling from east to west stopped at Selma en route to Sacramento or Stockton while passengers travelling north walked or took trains south to Visalia or Fresno. On July 20, 1886 (the date that Central Pacific Railroad built their new line through central California), historian Drury Richardson wrote about what he called “the great railroad event” when he described how “a body of menclad horsemen galloped down upon us from behind our hills [and] within five minutes had ridden through our gates […] we were sacked without resistance- no shots being fired save by those who defended themselves!” This event signals what would become known as The Great Train Robbery – an event that disrupted travel through Central Valley once again making it unsafe for commuters journeying between east coast ports such as Oakland and San Francisco as well as farmers travelling between Salinas and downtown Los Angeles
