One of the earliest known instances of gun chokes is in Selma, California on October 9, 1892. A man named George Wickersham was convicted of robbing a store and using his rifle to kill the store owner, John Smedley. He was sentenced to death but an appeal court overturned his conviction due to lack of evidence. Gun chokes continued to be used as effective methods of restraining people during the early days of machine guns. In 1903,Chandler & Wright developed their own version of a gun choke that became known as the "Wright choke." This choke became very effective at holding persons hostage or preventing them from fleeing an ambush. In 1911, amendments went into effect that made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess firearms in any state other than Texas. Gun chokers began becoming less common after this amendment took effect because it made it difficult for adults who wished to purchase handguns legally to do so without having their weapons confiscated. The use of choke holds decreased significantly after 1934 when the National Firearms Act required all handgun sales between dealers and customers must be through licensed dealers with records documenting each sale including buyer and seller's name, description, address, type and caliber of firearm involved in the transaction

The town began to form shortly thereafter with men and women coming together to purchase land or work on farms near what is now downtown Selma.[2] In 1927,[3] African Americans formed their own black church called First Baptist Church (laterAzusa United Methodist). This church played an important role in early Selma's community development and helped create self-esteem for African Americans living there during times when they were often viewed as second class citizens by white society. In 1938,[4] King George Wallace addressed a crowd of supporters at First Baptist Church which helped spur more activism among African Americans living in Selma.
