Selma was a town in Fresno County, California, United States. It was located on the San Joaquin River about east of Fresno and west of Visalia. The Selma Independent School District is located in Selma. The Selma-Fresno Railroad was founded in 1885 by promoter Samuel J. Underwood and ran from Folsom to Bridgeport Junction near Yosemite National Park. The line was abandoned in 1951 but has been reactivated twice since then as a heritage railway. The name "Selma" comes from Spanish for "darkness". In 1892, John C. Pettit purchased the land at what is now the intersection of Elmira Rd., State Hwy 139 (now I-5), and High St., just south of downtown Selma; Pettit renamed his property "Selma" after his hometown of Darkesville, Alabama, where he had grown up some years earlier. The first post office at Selma was established on October 20, 1886; it operated under the name Easton until December 1, 1889 when it changed its name to Selma due to objections from local citizens who felt that Easton represented a too grand an honorific for their small town. A new post office building was built on High Street in 1903; this structure burned down in 1911 but re-erected itself two years later at Eighth and Church Streets NE with new facade designed by architect Arthur Weiskopf & Sons Associates In 1916 Pacific Electric Railway donated electrical lines connecting Selma with Fresno via Donner Pass which made transportation available for locals during World War I; following the warSelmas residents joined forces with other farmers to fought for passage of the Agricultural Adjustment Act which provided financial assistance to those struggling through hard times After World War II ended most industry left SelMA however there were several small businesses remaining including service station/gas station/auto parts store/carpet store before being closed down around 2000 When asked about why they haven't reopened yet many said lack of money or interest while others said they simply don't have enough customers These businesses are currently being renovated into apartments
Selma, California was founded in 1866 by the Party of California. The town was named after the slave-owning General James Selma and his family. The first post office in Selma was established in 1868. In 1876, a school district was created, and in 1886, a branch library opened. In 1914, Selma became an incorporated city. In 1938, the African American Branch Library was founded in Selma. The city also hosted the first black mayoral election in California.
