TheSelma Gun Show has been a mainstay in the history of the town of Selma, California since its inception in 1984. The show is a fundraiser and exhibition for the Selma History Museum and features firearms from around the world. In 1986, at the Selma Gun Show, then-Mayor Richard "Dick" Nixon signed an ordinance that banned handgun sales to anyone under 21 years old. The gun show was among the first to be held in Selma after this ordinance was passed. With only three exceptions over the next 25 years, all other towns in Selma followed suit and outlawed handgun sales on their own soil. This policy directly impacted gun shows as they were unable to take place without prior approval from their respective county officials. However, with passage of Proposition 64 in 2016 (the “Gun Control Bill”), all but four of these communities have now legalized handgun sales within their borders. As a result of this change, gun Shows are once again becoming an important part of local history and culture!

Selma is a city in the U.S. state of California, located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Los Angeles. Selma was also the sites of both major anti-war protests during the 1960s and 1970s and is now an important African American community center and cultural hub in the region. The name "Selma" comes from Spanish for "the black town." The city's moniker came about because it was home to a small number of African Americans who had come to work on ranchlands near Los Angeles. In 1871, after years of petitioning by some white settlers, California General José Maria de Altamirano granted land to black people as part of his effort to populate what would become Southern California. The grant designated Selma as one of five townships within Los Angeles County. In response to this new opportunity, many black people moved into Selma from surrounding counties in southern California, including Compton, Lynwood, South Gate, Lancaster (now Carson City), Arcadia and Gardena. By 1924 over 60% of Selma's population were Negroes; however progress was slow due in large part to opposition from white merchants and politicians throughoutSouthern California who saw any increase in black populations as nothing but competition for jobs and housing opportunities their own citizens enjoyed. Despite these obstacles though, variousSelmanians -- young and old alike -- forged ahead with education, enterprise and activism despite little support from local or national authorities until dramatic changes began taking place nationally following World War II when segregation started creeping back into America through policies like Jim Crow laws across all levels of society
