Selma was founded in 1871 by physician and civic leader Dr. J.D. Selma, who saw the need for a town with access to healthy rifle, pistols and shotguns ammunition. By 1899, ammunition sales in Selma had reached $1 million a year and it had become one of the most important ammo markets in California. Ammunition production throughout California continued until the early 1920s when World War I halted ammunition production in California. The first time Americans participated actively in World War I was on April 6th 1914 when 2nd Lieutenant John Sanger of the 9th Calvary Regiment served as an artilleryman with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment at Loos Trench near Ypres Belgium. Captain Halsey led his battery into battle against German troops under General von Kluck on April 6th 1914 and captain Sanger was among those killed or wounded that day. The following day at 3pm Captain Halsey's battery relieved Company B ofCompany A which fought its way back to safety after having lost about 20% of its men including Captain Sanger who is buried at Menin Ridge Cemetery west of Arras France today (See photo below). In 1915 American participation increased with President Woodrow Wilson calling for America to enter World War I along with Great Britain and France On October 14th 1915 Colonel George Cushing ordered all powder plants statewide closed due to an unprecedented shortage of munitions supplies caused by Russia's entry into war against Serbia American shells were responsible for someof the heaviest losses suffered during World War 1 including 5 Machine Gun nests destroyed along trenches just north of Cambrai France on November 11th 1918; total losses for both sides amounted to over 100,000 dead or missing On September 10th 1916 Major General John Pershing ordered All Guns Enlisted within United States Service to be discharged at their nearest depot ready for export duty . munitions manufacturers responded by expanding capacity around the clock commencing stockpiling arms worldwide anticipating war . In early 1917 there were reports that Russia may have withdrawn from the war leaving Germany dominant but this turned out not to be true as soon as Austria-Hungary joined forces with Germany so Italy followed suit while Japan entered the war later that year leaving behind a global arms race leading up to World War 2
