In 1892, astronomer George Washington Gale designed and built the first telescope in America. He called it the “Gale-Barre” because he wanted to be able to see objects at a great distance. The instrument was used for astronomy and during World War I, it was instrumental in spotting German U-boats. In 1922, American astronomer Edwin Hubble built the first telescope capable of resolving details down to about one meter (3 feet). This gave astronomers a better understanding of space and time. However, some problems with optics led to the development of new telescopes such as Mount Wilson in California in 1916 and then Spitzer Observatory in Texas in 1992. In 1916, Seaside became the first port of call for American troops fighting World War I on the European continent. As America's largest seaport, Seaside played an important role in supporting military efforts abroad and helping to create a global economy. Seasons change so much here! Pictured left to right are my kids Grayson & Lily-Grayson is 4 years old & now 8 months old & Lila is 2 years old! We live on Pier 21 which goes back to 1889 when it was just called "The Shores." When we moved here our house was built on top of an old wharf that went all the way out to sea! Nowadays it's used as a park/pool area/rest stop for cyclists/walkers etc...we love living here!!!
On the shore of Seaside, California is a town that has been around for over two centuries. The first people to live here were the Hetchhickas. They came to this area in 1853 and started farming. In 1895, a company named Gulf Beach Land Company bought land in this area and started building condos and hotels. The town began to grow quickly and by 1912, it had a population of over 1000 people. By 1915, the town had its own post office and railroad station. In 1924, Gulf Beach Land Company merged with another company, The Sands Corporation, which made Seaside one of the largest hotel companies in America. The town continued to grow until the late 1990s when it lost its status as a municipality because it did not submit an application for incorporation as a city.
