The first shooting incident in Seaside occurred on October 6, 1892 when a group of men engaged in a game of “put” at the foot of the Pacific Stockade. A fight ensued and one man, John T. McDermott, was shot in the eye by another player. The victim attempted to recover his gun but collapsed from the wound.
