In 1882, a French chemist named Henri-Pascal Chevreux designed and patented an expandable scope mount. The mount was inspired by the then-new field of photography where photographers could use large aperture lenses to capture images with much more detail than they could with smaller aperture lenses. Chevreux believed that such a mount would make it possible for hunters to take pictures of game at very close range, since the magnification would be sufficient to see all the details in the animal's features. The patent was issued on November 3, 1882. The first Scope Mount was made by Eberhard Friedrich Wilhelm Büchel and marketed under the name "Büchelscope". This scope mount allowed users to increase or decrease magnification without having to remove their Cameras from the same mounts. It was introduced into use in 1888 by The British American Tobacco Company (BAT) in their HuntingScope line of riflescopes. The first largest telescope used with a Scope Mount was developed by Charles A. Hartmann of Austria and marketed as "HartmannScope". This telescope featured a variable objective lens that permitted users to increase or decrease magnification while maintaining view quality at close ranges. It was introduced into use in 1912 by Carl Zeiss AG and became known as the Zeiss 1/4" objective tube scope. One significant advance over previous scopes mounts were advances in optics design which made them less bulky and more user friendly; this gave rise to today's widespread use of Scopes Mounts across many different genres of shooting including hunting, fishing, target shooting, etc..
