Gun targets have been a part of Seaside, California for many years. The first guns were brought to the area in 1876 by Captain George W. Denny and his Pacific Coast Fur Co. The company built three ranges in Seaside and its surrounding areas, one on State Street and two at the beach. This Gun Tangle Museum is open every day from 10am-4pm during the summer months, and admission is free. The first gun targets in Seaside were Confederate artillery cannons that emplacement was located on the bluff overlooking the harbor. The cannons were used as a warning to sailors and other vessels. They also functioned as a shooting range for local residents. In 1851, the town of Seaside began erecting small brick buildings in its downtown area to serve as shops and offices. These buildings still stand today and can be seen from the harbor. On July 4, 1852, Seaside hosted the first ever American bombardment of an enemy fortification during the Mexican-American War when two ships bombarded Fort Yuma. This event is often considered to be one of the most significant moments in Seaside's history.
