Seaside is one of two towns in Marin County (the other being Novato) that are not incorporated as municipalities. The town was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1874 as an agricultural outpost on the edge of present-day Seaside Park. The name comes from Spanish "Isla de la Selva" meaning "Island of the Woods." Father Junipero Serra's original intent for Seaside was to protect workers during the construction of San Francisco's new Pacific Railroad line. However, due to its location and access to fresh sea water, Seaside quickly became a popular summer resort destination for locals and tourists alike. In 1915, Father Junipero Serra donated land adjacent to his church which would become Seaside Village; today's seaside park was developed on this land over time. In 1966, Mayor Robert Fenton proposed merging with neighboring Novato into one city; however this proposal met opposition from many residents who felt that their community had unique strengths that separated it from Novato. As a result, Separate Town status was granted to Seaside in 1976 and remains today. In 2008, the town voted 97% in favor of annexing Carlsbad Caverns National Monument which makes it the first municipality in California to do so. Today, Seaside offers numerous retail stores as well as restaurants and attractions specific to its location right next to Tomales Bayou which empties into Golden Gate Bay

On May 6, 1907, Seaside's first library opened with over 280 volumes including works by Jules Verne, Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Conan Doyle. 2 years later on August 25, 1909, Seaside voters passed another resolution asking for an amusement park to be established in town so that people could enjoy fishing and other recreational activities without having to leave their homes for hours at a time This new park would become one of California's most popular tourist attractions with over 2 million visitors annually .In 1916, construction began on what would become known as Sea World – one of the largest amusement parks ever built . It would take more than 20 years before it would open its doors to the public On July 14th of 1948 “Aqualung” went down off Point Conception into full view of onlookers when she surfaced just shy of hitting shoreline After almost 4 decades at sea she finally stopped leaking oil on September 5th 1978
The first permanent white settlement in Seaside, California was established in 1851. The townspeople of Seaside built a log cabin on the bluff above the harbor. The town grew rapidly and by 1875 it had a population of 150 people. In 1887, Seaside became an incorporated city and continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of 1,500 people. By 1930, Seaside had shrunk to 350 people and by 1940 only 100 remained. In 1951, Seaside merged with nearby Redondo Beach to form the present-day city of Redondo Beach.
