The town of Seaside was founded in 1887 by Jameson Grosse and his wife Emma as Clearbrook Beach on what is now part of Golden Gate Park. In 1912, Grosse built the first summer home in Seaside and named it "Dolphin" after his uncle who owned a Dolphin dock at San Francisco Bay. The name "Seaside" originated with Grosse's daughter-in-law who wanted to be called "Beach Bum". In 1915, Harry Chandler opened Chandler's Restaurant on First Street which became one of the most popular tourist spots in Seaside. From 1919 to 1922, he aired 3 daily radio programs from his restaurant - "The World News", "Hollywood Horseshoe", and "Pizza Place". In 1926, John Atherton bought property adjacent to Second Street West for $5,000 that would become Atherton beachfront park which still stands today with its pier and amphitheater utilized as a stage for local events like music festivals and carnivals throughout the years (though some have moved away). In 1933 an amusement park called Sands Point was built on Atherton beach front park using funding from Hollywood movie producer Samuel Goldwyn who also donated land for it next door to where Piers 19 & 20 now stand; this amusement park closed down in 1951 when it merged into Disneyland according to Coast To Coast AM radio show transcriptions from that era: What followed were decades of development along Second Street West with many homes being built facing both sandsprits (the ocean) then state highway 1A which bisected town until finally becoming state route 101 within city limits making it difficult or impossible to leave Seaside without first crossing state route 1A. This has made parking lots available all along State Route 101 near beaches/resorts since before I-5was constructed! So much so that if you live anywhere within city limits but want to go outside city limits for recreation purposes you basically have 2 choices... drive into town or takestate route 1A! Which means there are virtually no areas within town limits openable beyond streets bordering 14th street even though only 8% of total population lives inside those streets! While some new housing has been developed over time along Third Street South just inland from Highway 101 make sure not to confuse this new housing with what used to be seasIDE!!! amusements!! For example if you go out towards Cliff House Resort think about going out past State Route 1A onto Third street south instead!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lastly let me stress that my comments are not meant as criticism towards anyone living inside their own home but rather an objective look at how things have changed over time!!!

The first Europeans to explore and conquer the California coast were the Spanish in 1542. The area that is now Seaside was part of Rancho San Diego, granted to Diego de Alcalá by King Philip II of Spain in 1764. Englishman John Sebastian Knight landed on the coast on July 1, 1769 and named it after himself, Knight's Point. In 1821, Mexican Conquistador José Gabriel Báez sailed down the Pacific Coast from Acapulco along what is now Highway 101. He sighted an uninhabited cape called "Seaside" on February 14 and named it Santa Barbara Harbor after his patron saint, Saint Barbara. An ad for a land grant at Seaside was placed in the Santa Barbara County Gazette on March 2, 1821. The land was divided into sections and sold at auction on April 9th. A portion of the beach near present-day Seaside became known as Báez Beach because of this event. On September 12th 1840 about 60 people assembled at Seaside for a meeting held by Commodore James Caird commanding USS " Constitution" during her circumnavigation of North America which resulted in calling attention to new discoveries along the coasts of California On October 3rd 1861 a group led by Captain Francis Drake disembarked from USS Discovery at Cape Horn and explored certain areas around present day Seaside including those around Knight's Point where they built a small Fort Drake which still stands today as one of Marin County's most popular tourist attractions
